Saturday the 9th of May marked the return of the annual Hanwell Hootie Festival – a free, volunteer-led music festival, spread across 14 venues, including pubs, parks, and public spaces throughout Hanwell. Originally founded as a celebration of Hanwell’s heritage and its legendary connection to Jim Marshall, the festival has grown into a vibrant platform dedicated to nurturing emerging talent and keeping the spirit of live music accessible for all. This year, we were proud to sponsor the Terry Marshall Youth Stage.

By supplying the stage lighting, we were able to support 12 up-and-coming solo artists and bands, helping them build confidence through meaningful exposure while developing new skills and gaining valuable live performance experience. For many younger performers, opportunities like this are an important step in building both experience and belief in their creative potential.

As part of the collaboration, Kev Westbury, Head of Artist Development at the Terry Marshall Academy, shared his appreciation for the support from Neg Earth Lights, saying:
“The Terry Marshall Academy is delighted to have “Neg Earth Lights” joining our stage this year to provide not only some amazing lights but also connecting with the youth team. This is a massive privilege to have such a prestigious company wanting to provide a youth stage with a professional light show for free. So we at Terry Marshall Academy want to give a huge thank you to “Neg Earth Lights” and we really hope it will be an experience we can repeat again in the future to support our youth teams and bands.”

At Neg Earth, community is at the heart of what we do. We believe the future of live events depends on creating inclusive opportunities for the next generation – not only for performers, but for the wider network of creatives, technicians, and production professionals who make live music possible. Supporting initiatives like the Terry Marshall Youth Stage allows us to give young people access to real-world industry environments, helping them build connections and find their place within the live events community.

As a company rooted in live entertainment, we recognise the importance of investing in the future of the industry. Whether through technical support, placements, or creating opportunities for visibility and growth, we remain committed to championing the next generation and helping keep live music culture thriving for years to come.

Testimonial

“We just wanted to say a huge thank you from Terry Marshall Academy and the Hanwell Hootie for providing a great team and fab light show. It made all the difference between a good show and a great show. We really hope we can do some more together. We have a few more dates for local festivals and I wondered if we might talk about training for young people on lighting?”

Did you know that gardening is considered a form of ‘green exercise’, and can reduce stress levels by 4.2% and enhance feelings of well-being by 6.6%?

In many ways, gardening is both earth care and self-care, with benefits that grow in both directions.

World Earth Day: A Celebration with Purpose

This year, we celebrated World Earth Day with purpose – engaging in a series of activities across two weeks that brought community together while making a positive impact on our environment. From litter picking along the Grand Union Canal to supporting local wildlife initiatives and reimagining our monthly Tea & Talk, each activity reflected our shared commitment to sustainability and community.

Caring for Our Community: Grand Union Canal Clean-Up

We kicked things off with a walk along the Grand Union Canal, equipped with litter pickers, gloves and bin bags, ready to clear any waste left behind. It was a simple but meaningful way to give back to our local area. At Neg Earth, community extends beyond our workplace, and by helping restore the canal, we’re also creating a cleaner, more enjoyable space for those who live nearby, as well as for local wildlife. Encouragingly, we found less litter than last year – a small but important sign that collective efforts are making a difference.

Supporting Wildlife & Local Ecosystems

Our focus on wildlife continued as we encouraged participation in the Ealing Beaver Challenge – an initiative dedicated to reintroducing beavers into flood-prone areas. These animals play a vital role in restoring natural ecosystems and helping to reduce flooding for local residents. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes the most effective solutions come from working with nature rather than against it.

Sustainability in Action: A Greener Tea & Talk

We also gave our monthly Tea & Talk a sustainable twist. Led by our very own Matthew Alston, the session brought colleagues together to plant a selection of pet-safe herbs, while learning practical ways to care for plants and adopt more sustainable habits at home. It was a chance to connect and learn something new, as well as enjoy some therapeutic gardening. Even our sweet treats stayed on theme…

Looking Ahead: Growing Our Impact Together

Our World Earth Day activities show that sustainability can be both hands-on and genuinely enjoyable. Whether it’s cleaning up your local community, supporting nature reserves, or simply getting stuck into a bit of gardening, every small action contributes to a bigger impact. Together, we’re continuing to build a workplace culture that values both people and the planet.

We’re excited to be sponsoring the Terry Marshall Academy Stage at the upcoming Hanwell Hootie Festival. The stage is dedicated to giving young people a pathway into live music, no matter their starting point, with a focus on the social and collaborative side of making music rather than it being seen as a solo pursuit. By supporting emerging musicians, providing access to industry insight, and creating real performance opportunities, Hanwell Hootie helps young people build confidence, develop their skills, and gain valuable experience as they grow.

At Neg Earth, we’re committed to supporting the future of live events by opening up opportunities to a more diverse group of young people. With so much time spent on screens today, spaces like this matter more than ever – bringing young people together, building confidence, and creating a sense of belonging. Through creative opportunities and real-world experience, we aim to support the next generation as they find their place within the music industry.

We’re really proud to be part of it.

Hanwell Hootie 2026

This milestone marks another exciting chapter for our team, as this will be the third time we’ve supported the Eurovision Song Contest in this capacity. Eurovision is one of the world’s most iconic live broadcast events, known for its scale, complexity, and global audience.

We are incredibly proud of our team, whose expertise and dedication have made this achievement possible. Their passion for excellence continues to drive us forward, and Eurovision 2026 will be a powerful showcase of what we can accomplish together.

Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare for this spectacular event.

The Hunt Begins

Before the Easter Bank Holiday started, some special visitors decided to pay us a visit at Neg Earth and spread some festive cheer around the building. Neg Earth employees arrived on Thursday morning, to find that over 100 eggs had been hidden across the office and warehouse. The hunt began to see who could find the most chocolatey treats…

Sweet Treats & Stronger Teams

This egg-citing hunt helped us to foster team bonding and boost morale amongst our community, just in time for the long weekend. However, with everyone on the lookout, the eggs didn’t stay hidden for long…Our marketing bunnies handed out even more eggs, making sure everyone had something to indulge in over the Easter weekend, because after all, there’s no such thing as too much chocolate.

Treats for Every Team Member

And of course, being a dog-friendly company, we had to get our furry-friends involved too (with the help of some treats)!

Neg Earth Lights is proud to announce the renewal of its valued partnership with Music Support for a further two years, reinforcing a shared commitment to improving mental health and wellbeing across the music industry.

Music Support is a specialist charity providing help and resources to anyone working in the UK music industry experiencing mental health, addiction or substance use challenges.

Neg Earth Lights, the leading independent lighting and rigging supplier, has supported the work of the charity for over five years and has now confirmed its commitment through to 2028. Building on a strong foundation, the renewal will deepen collaboration between the two organisations and see them working more closely to deliver initiatives aimed at ensuring mental health is a core priority across live production environments. Neg Earth Lights contributes regular donations to the charity, including a generous sum to its 10th anniversary fundraising campaign.

As Music Support celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the charity has reported a sharp rise in demand for its services, currently seeing a 71% increase in calls from individuals across all areas of the industry. Of these, over half are assessed as being in crisis.

Mental health awareness and advocacy are deeply embedded in Neg Earth Lights’ DNA. Founded by individuals who began their careers as road crew on tour, the company has first-hand experience of the realities and pressures of life in the music industry. Today, every member of staff is trained in Mental Health First Aid, ensuring colleagues are equipped to support one another and fostering a culture where wellbeing is actively prioritised.

Pip Ridgway, Managing Director of Neg Earth Lights, said: “Our people are the reason our events succeed. That’s why supporting mental health is so important to us. Live events can be intense – the demands of complex logistics and constant deadlines mean long hours and significant pressure to deliver, because there is no plan B. There are passion and creativity in abundance, but if we want our people to enjoy long, sustainable careers in this industry, we must actively support their wellbeing, not just talk about it. Every member of our staff is trained in Mental Health Awareness and attends a self-care session in addition to those who receive additional training to become Mental Health First Aiders.”

Joe Hastings, CEO of Music Support said: “Neg Earth Lights’ dedication to prioritising their team’s wellbeing sets a strong example for the wider industry. Careers in live events can be incredibly fulfilling, but they often come with high levels of pressure, making meaningful support essential. By embedding mental health awareness and providing practical resources, Neg Earth Lights is helping shape a healthier and more sustainable working environment. We’re proud to continue our partnership with them.

At Music Support, we’re here for anyone experiencing mental health, addiction or wellbeing challenges, as well as those around them. Whether through early intervention or urgent care, our focus is on accessible, compassionate support. As Music Support enters its second decade, partnerships like this play a vital role in building a stronger, more supportive industry and ensure that critical services remain available to those who need them most.”

Investing in How We Work Together

At Neg Earth Lights, being a forward-thinking, wellness-driven company means continually investing in how we work together. Because of this, we invited Steps Drama to lead an interactive workshop here, focused on strengthening our organisational culture and supporting a safe, collaborative environment.

Reflecting on Behaviour and Workplace Culture

With community at the heart of what we do, the session encouraged us to reflect on how our behaviour shapes the workplace. Through creative, drama-based scenarios, we explored how stress can surface in our actions, how to recognise it early, and how to respond in a way that prioritises both safety and respect.

Encouraging Open Dialogue and Growth

The workshop encouraged us to challenge uncomfortable behaviour, and spark honest debate about ways of navigating different workplace dynamics – reinforcing the importance of speaking up, being open to feedback, and staying committed to personal and collective growth.

Moving Forward with Excellence

Thanks to Steps Drama, we were able to better understand how to steer challenging situations while holding ourselves to the high standard of excellence we value at Neg Earth. Excellence is reflected not just in what we achieve, but in how we show up for each other every day.

Thank you again to Mark and the team for delivering this thought-provoking session, and to all who attended to help nurture our culture at Neg Earth.

Different Minds, Better Ideas

Did you know that neurodiverse teams are proven to drive more innovation, adaptability and growth within a company? As a business that values trailblazing, this is something we actively strive to champion. We invited neurodiversity consultant Maisie Cass, to speak with us about designing work to fit people, not people to fit work. She also shared ways to reduce stigma and challenge common misconceptions around neurodiversity.

Building a more Inclusive Events Industry

Around 1 in 7 people in the UK are estimated to be neurodivergent; with the live events industry thought to have one of the highest proportions. However, many neurodiverse people may feel uncomfortable disclosing their condition to their employers due to fears of stigma, as behaviours are often labelled rather than understood. At Neg Earth, we place a strong value on community. As our Managing Director Pip Ridgway, emphasised, “We have a responsibility not just to recognise neurodiversity, but to truly understand it… Neurodiverse talent will reshape the future of our workforce, driving innovation, creativity, and resilience in ways we are only beginning to appreciate. The more we learn, the stronger, more inclusive, and more successful our organisation & community will become.”

From Awareness to Action: Supporting Neurodivergent Talent

During our session, we explored how to foster a more inclusive and supportive work culture – one built on compassion, curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn.

Many typical workplace practices – such as unspoken rules and complex office dynamics – can unintentionally create challenges for neurodivergent people. These environments can often lead to ‘masking’, where people feel the need to adapt their behaviour, which can result in burnout. Even individuals with the same condition may present it in very different ways. This means there is no singular approach to creating optimal working conditions.

The Future of work is inclusive

With over 40% of the workforce predicted to be neurodivergent by 2040, this session reinforced the importance of moving beyond assumptions and taking the time to understand individual needs – rather than expecting people to adapt to rigid ways of working. As Neg Earth places much emphasis on our community, we see this as an opportunity to actively shape a more inclusive and supportive workplace. By embedding the lessons shared by Maisie, we aim to create an environment where neurodiverse individuals feel understood, supported, and empowered within the workplace.

This means;

  • fostering open conversations
  • setting clear expectations
  • approaching differences with curiosity rather than judgement.

Thank you again to Maisie for delivering this insightful workshop, and to all who attended.

Neurodiversity Training & Consultancy for Business and Education

Neg Earth Lights has maintained an ongoing collaboration with Rose Bruford College since 2021. This year, the partnership saw 20 students dedicate significant time to preparing the lighting for their end of year Creative Lighting Control” 2026 show.

Arriving on site at Neg Earth Lights, they were well prepared with a strong professional approach.

Melissa Russell, Rental Asset Coordinator– It was a pleasure to have the Rose Bruford students on site at Neg Earth Lights and to work alongside them in preparing their lighting and equipment for the 2026 CLC live event.

The Neg Earth team were fortunate to attend the CLC event and were impressed with the lighting designs and their use of lighting techniques to deliver the show.

We wish all the students continued success and look forward to following their future achievements within the industry.
